Recipes From The Road Cookbook by The Cooking Ladies
The Cooking Ladies’ Recipes from the Road is not just another cookbook.
In 1978, best friends Phyllis Hinz and Lamont Mackay set out in a Volkswagon van to begin a nine-month culinary journey around Europe. After settling down to successful careers as restaurant owners, they hit the road again in 1998, this time to explore North America in a forty-foot motorhome.
In Recipes from the Road, Phyllis and Lamont introduce the regional dishes and friendly folks they’ve encountered traveling the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Finding ingredients in farmers’ markets, roadside grocery stores, and sometimes on the end of a fishing line, the Cooking Ladies present 100 stove-top recipe creations.
Phyllis and Lamont also share their stories from life on the road. You’ll meet people like Steve Watson, a biker who sells twelve-inch cinnamon buns in the Yukon, and Ila Loetscher, the turtle lady of South Padre Island who founded Sea Turtle Inc., an organization that rescues injured sea turtles from the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll read about the sour toe cocktail at a hotel in Dawson City, and the bull chip throwing contest in Mercedes, Texas. You’ll learn about the wild burros of Oatman, Arizona, and the hungry bears of Hyder, Alaska.
This cookbook is a treat for RVers, armchair travelers, and anyone with an appetite for good food and adventure.
